As if looking for a new job isn’t stressful enough, when you are offered an interview, there’s an even bigger mountain to climb – the interview itself. Anyone out there like mountaineering? It’s like anything else, if you believe you can do it well, you will do it well. All we need to do is create a little confidence and self-belief, and Everest will reduce in size dramatically.
My client believed they were rubbish at interviews. I had a sneaking suspicion that this wasn’t a strongly held belief, but rather a confidence issue. Having confirmed this through coaching and agreeing an outcome with the client, I set about helping them using some simple NLP change processes. Specifically? An Anchor. If you don’t know what one of those is, ask yourself whether you have a lucky tie or a special pair of shoes. If the answer is Yes, then you have an anchor already set up which triggers an emotional state and behaviour when you put on your special shoes. Our lives our filled with them and we don’t realise what they are.
I set my client a new anchor, using some of the anchors they already had but didn’t realise they had. And it worked. They got the job! Best of all, they’ll use that anchor again and again in different circumstances, and have the ability to create a new one on their own.
