Every Autumn, I’m glued to Strictly Come Dancing on BBC1. I love the dancing, but I love the transformations of the contestants even more.

In the most recent series, I was completely absorbed by two participants: Helen Skelton and Hamza Yassin. It seemed to me that in both cases, this experience was transformational for them. And of course, Hamza went on to win the series in December.

If you can remember, he shared his three top tips for life when he won:

“Number one, surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when you enter a room. Two, the top of one mountain is the bottom of the next, so keep climbing. And three, slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be.”

Each of these tips on their own is worthy of further exploration. They are all great coaching territories which I’ll summarise like this:

  1. Set and hold your personal boundaries. Pay attention to the positives and keep moving towards those. Discard the negatives.
  2. We can all get stuck. The most important thing is to take a step forward, no matter how small. And it doesn’t matter what direction you take the step in. Just take it, and you’ll gain some perspective and a sense of momentum.
  3. If you want to make change stick, then repetition is the key. And that takes time. New habits need practice and embedding.

Thank you Hamza for this brilliant advice. In 2023, if you’d like to explore any of these topics, or others, please give me a call.

Here’s a reminder of Hamza and Jowita’s couple’s choice dance.
