I work with an adult literacy charity: it provides one2one tuition for adults through a network of volunteers. Have you ever considered what it would be like to be unable to read, the impact that would have? Take a minute.
No directions or instructions, no love letters or poetry. Not to mention books. I imagine you’ve got to be pretty creative in order to get along without being able to read these days.
What has intrigued me the most has been the feedback from the Readers about what learning to read has enabled them to do. In the majority of cases, it is not the simple act of reading which has given them the greatest satisfaction, it is the many other doors that their new learning has opened for them: confidence; walking tall; independence.
What’s stopping you from letting go of an unhelpful behaviour or activity, learning a new one, and stepping into a brighter future?
