I was having a conversation with a dear friend about poor impulse control (in the context of food). She and I have often talked about the kind of exercise we enjoy, and the subject of cycling came up. Ironically, we immediately visited our local charity bike shop and purchased two very cheap second-hand bikes!

My weight has yo-yo’d for most of my life. There have been times when I’ve really got the exercise bug and motivated really well to reduce my size and be fitter. I’ll acknowledge that I’m quite competitive and one of my challenges is setting goals which are too grand, which I know I’ll fail at, so I then don’t motivate. 

I’m starting to think about physical activities which I can do for pleasure. You all know I love to dance as I’ve blogged about that before. I also enjoy racket sports as the inter-play is really important for me. Swimming I find mindful. And funnily enough, I also enjoy a gentle cycle ride. I love the breeze on my face and the feeling of fresh air rushing into my lungs.

So I’m making a shift towards activity as pleasure rather than a means to an end. I’ve spent too long with the negative internal dialogue which is an imperative….. must get fit. 

2018 saw some personal hard times and my default response was to comfort eat my way through the latter half of the year. 2019 is going to be about moving my body, activities I enjoy. At my speed. My agenda. My goal.

When you start to think about what you’d really enjoy versus what you think you should be doing, what comes to mind? 

So why don’t you let go of the obligation and get out and do what you really want to do. For you. In 2019.
